The CAST is a science test that measures how well your child understands the scientific core ideas, concepts, and practices in the CA NGSS. The CAST assesses skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. The CAST contains stand-alone questions and performance tasks.
Who takes the test? Students in grades five and eight and once in high school (either grade ten, eleven, or twelve) take the CAST. For more information about high school science test administration, refer to the Science Test Administration for High School Students.
Students may use the Alternate ELPAC practice test for grade span nine and ten or grade span eleven and twelve to prepare for the Initial Alternate ELPAC. Resources, including scoring guides, rubrics, and DFAs, support the practice and training tests for the CAASPP and ELPAC.
