When Diver Dan first appears on the show you get the impression of a very laid back, countrified fisherman. He actually turns out to be a bright and humorous character who Laura soon falls in love with. Diver had an abusive childhood and it is something that weighs heavily on his mind. His mother left when he was young and his Dad was violent.
When the Gibson's move to Pearl Bay, Diver becomes somewhat of a surrogate father to Rupert. They fish together and Diver passes on some of his worldly knowledge. Miranda is slightly less keen on the whole Diver - Laura relationship because it is so soon after the family drama involving Jack and Trudi.
When the Gibson's first arrive in town Diver gives them directions about how to get to Pear Bay. He didn't have to but he is just that sort of person who is always there to lend a helping hand.
In "The Fellowship of The Suit" Trudi arrives in Pearl Bay to try and make amends with Laura. All the men of the town go nuts for her but she only has eyes for diver, who, little does she know, is with Laura. Despite all her flirting Diver stays true to Laura as a testament to their relationship.
Throughout the first series there are lots of intermit moments between Diver and Laura , a particularly memorable one involving a sudden arrival of Laura's ex... However, It becomes apparent that Diver and Laura aren't forever at the end of the first series, he is to relaxed, and she to driven for it to ever properly work.
In "Vaya Con Dios to All That" Diver breaks the news to Laura that he is leaving for the Galapagos Islands. She is heart broken but doesn't attempt to stop him.
