He was the surviving son of King Frederick V of Denmark and his second wife, Juliana Maria of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel.
They were the parents of at least 7 sons and 3 daughters. She died on 13 March 1867, in Ballenstedt, Quedlinburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at the age of 77, and was buried in Schleswig, Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
