She leaves the baby, but not before accidentally revealing where she works. The orphanage director searches out David, the playboy son of the store's owner J.B. Merlin, and explains that a woman abandoned her child because his store laid her off, requesting that he re-hire her.
Polly Parrish, a clerk at Merlin's Department Store, is mistakenly presumed to be the mother of a foundling. Outraged at Polly's unmotherly conduct, David Merlin becomes determined to keep the single woman and "her" baby together.
