Spike's reason for going back and fight Vicious at the end, after Julia is killed, is apparently nothing more than revenge, like what happened with Mao and Annie (instance where Julia realises they aren't fleeing as he won't let her death go unavenged), but there's more: "proving if I'm alive".
Tbh, I think he's dead because of blood loss (head injuries and the final cut from Vicious) if nothing else. While Spike has survived some pretty bad injuries before, jet and Faye were there to get him again. This time Spike said his final goodbye to them to go deal with his past, and much like with Julia, they are probably staying back.

It can also be interpreted abstractly since Spike, Julia, and Vicious were doomed to never salvage their broken relationships.
Maybe if Bebop's crew had stuck things out a little longer, it could have worked. But Ed and Ein left, Faye left and came back in a way that suggested the Bebop wasn't her home by choice, and Jet's own failed relationship and feelings of abandonment probably played into him telling Spike to go after Julia.
