Bob Keeshan. Robert James Keeshan (June 27, 1927 – January 23, 2004) was an American television producer and actor. He created and played the title role in the children's television program Captain Kangaroo, which ran from 1955 to 1984, the longest-running nationally broadcast children's television program of its day.

Your photos and comments provided me with a wonderful return to a sweeter time. I was born in '53 and can't remember life without "The Banana Man".
Feb 5, 2007 · Whenever I saw The Banana Man on TV as a child - whether on Captain Kangaroo or some variety show - I found him way too creepy! A guy dressed somewhat like a down-and-out clown pulling long strings of bananas out of his pants while he made some horrid, ghostly sounds (that were apparently attempts at comical song).
