Carol Jenkins was an African-American woman who was murdered on September 16, 1968, by two white men in a sundown town in Indiana. Her murder remained unsolved for over thirty years until a tip led investigators to one of her alleged killers in the early 2000s.

Depending on where you are from, some students like myself can’t avoid going through Martinsville because it’s the main road to campus.
Martinsville has a reputation as an all-white town hostile to blacks, largely due to the 1968 murder of 21-year old Carol Jenkins, a black woman. Martinsville has received much media attention, including an article in the New Yorker by Mark Singer, entitled “Who Killed Carol Jenkins?%u201D (1/7/2002, 24-28).
