Kaline spent virtually his entire adult life as a Tiger, signing with the club as an 18-year-old the day after his high school graduation in Baltimore.

Al Kaline's number 6 was retired by the Detroit Tigers in 1980. Kaline was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980, becoming the tenth player in history to be inducted in his first year of eligibility. He was named on 340 of the 385 ballots (88.3%) cast by sportswriters.
The 18-year-old Kaline came to the Tigers in 1953 directly from high school, having never spent a day in the minors, and by the next season established himself as one of the game’s bright new talents. By 1955, at age 20, he became the youngest player to win a batting title when he hit .340.
