A CD single is a music single in the form of a compact disc (CD). Originally the CD single standard (as defined in the Red Book) was a 8 cm (3-inch) "mini CD" (CD3); later on the term referred to any single recorded onto a CD of any size, particularly the 12 cm (5-inch) "full-size" disc (CD5).
I've always wondered about this. I do own a few of them, but what was the point of the 3 inch CD single originally? Was it simply a marketing gimmick, or was the plan that 5 inch and 3 inch CDs were supposed to mimic LPs and 7 inch singles?

The 3 inch or 8cm compact disc (also branded as CD3 in the US) was an attempt to sell CD singles and EPs at a lower price point that would be distinguishable in size from 5" (12cm) CD albums, similar to the differences between 12" and 7" records. The first titles (mostly promotional) were released in 1987.
