- 1:26Jack Black halts Tenacious D tour over Trump commentsReuters VideosSTORY: Hollywood actor and musician Jack Black has ended a tour for his comedy-rock duo Tenacious D, after bandmate Kyle Gass made comments about the assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump. A social media video showed Gass, who was celebrating his birthday during a concert on stage in Sydney, Australia, being given a cake and asked to make a wish. He then seemed to say "don't miss Trump next time", before blowing out the candles. The comment came after the Republican was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday - an incident the FBI is probing as an assassination attempt. Jack Black said in an Instagram post: "I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday.... After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold." Black, who starred in movies like School of Rock and Jumanji, has been a vocal supporter of Joe Biden, and attended a re-election fundraiser event for the Democrat in June. He formed Tenacious D together with Gass in Los Angeles in 1994. On Tuesday Gass apologized on Instagram for his "severe lack of judgment" and said the comments were inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. His comments drew backlash from Australian politicians including the country's ambassador to the U.S., Kevin Rudd, who said people joking about violence should "grow up and find a decent job."14 hours ago

- 1:40DeSantis: Biden is 'Weekend at Bernie's' presidentReuters VideosSTORY: :: Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin :: Date: July 16, 2024 :: Ron DeSantis says America can't afford four more years of a 'Weekend at Bernie's' presidency :: Ron DeSantis, Florida Governor “Life was more affordable when Donald Trump was president. Our border was safer under the Trump administration and our country was respected when Donald Trump was our commander in chief.” “Our enemies do not confine their designs to between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. We need a commander in chief who can lead 24 hours a day and seven days a week. America cannot afford four more years of a ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ presidency.” “Now, Donald Trump stands in their way and he stands up for America. Donald Trump has been demonized. He's been sued. He's been prosecuted, and he nearly lost his life. We cannot let him down and we cannot let America down.” “For decades, my home state saw elections determined by razor thin margins. Today, due to bold leadership, the Democratic Party lies in ruins. The left is in retreat. Freedom reigns supreme. The woke mind virus is dead, and Florida is a solid Republican state.” The former Republican presidential hopeful took the stage at the Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee to show his support for his former rival, Donald Trump. “Donald Trump has been demonized, sued, prosecuted, and he nearly lost his life. We cannot let him down,” the Florida governor said. DeSantis concluded his speech by urging fellow Republicans to support the party across all levels of government and to fight for America. His remarks received standing ovations from the crowd, which included Donald Trump himself.18 hours ago
- 1:32Politics won't drive market returns -portfolio managerReuters VideosSTORY: Investors have been weighing the implications of a possible Donald Trump victory in the upcoming U.S. presidential election following the assassination attempt on the former president on Saturday. Shares of gun makers, prison and crypto-related companies have rallied as they would most likely benefit from a Trump presidency. While Trump has indicated support for policies traditionally seen as friendly to domestic businesses, such as loosening regulation, increasing tariffs on some foreign imports and cutting taxes, Smead says "whether politics are going to drive the returns of the stock market, that's spurious. I think that's really tough to predict." "The difference, though, versus his prior administration was energy companies are not willing to drill today. They're willing to give their money back to shareholders," said Smead. "So you could see situations where the policy would ask for an activity to happen and there is no response to that activity."1 day ago

- 1:54Teamsters mull not endorsing Biden in 2024 raceReuters VideosSTORY: Joe Biden may lose key union support... ahead of the U.S. presidential race, as leaders of the 1.3 million-member Teamsters union consider backing no candidate at all. Sources say a final decision on the matter is expected to come in the next few weeks. The union previously backed Biden in 2020... and working-class groups in closely contested states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada helped power his election victory that year. But people familiar with the union's deliberations point to months of deteriorating relations with Biden's team and some Teamsters leaders' concerns about Biden's political endurance. Teamsters President Sean O'Brien also made an appearance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday night and gave praise to Biden's opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump. "But one thing is clear. President Trump is a candidate who is not afraid of hearing from new, loud and often critical voices, and I think we all can agree whether people like them or they don't like him in light of what happened to him on Saturday, he has proven to be one tough S-O-B (for son of a bitch)." Still, sources say it's unlikely the Teamsters will endorse Trump either, due to deep divisions in the union. It would be the first time since 1996 that the Teamsters considered backing no candidate at all. The group's frustrations with Biden have grown in recent months. O'Brien was denied an Oval Office meeting to discuss a key priority - rescuing trucking giant Yellow Corp and its 30,000 union jobs from bankruptcy. A person familiar with the discussions say frustrations were compounded after calls from Democratic lawmakers and donors for Biden to drop his reelection bid following the presidential debate last month.2 days ago
- 1:46Trump receives roaring ovation at GOP conventionReuters VideosSTORY: Donald Trump drew cheers during the first night of the Republican National Convention on Monday, two days after a would-be assassin grazed his right ear with a bullet. Trump entered the Milwaukee venue with a bandaged ear, as GOP delegates and faithful stood with a roaring ovation. Many chanted "Fight! Fight! Fight!" and pumped their fists, referencing Trump's reaction in the moments after he was wounded on Saturday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The former president mouthed the words "Thank you" to the crowd, before shaking hands with his freshly picked running mate, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance, next to him. Trump is due to formally accept the party's nomination in a prime-time speech on Thursday to face Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election. While Vance is scheduled to address the convention on Wednesday. The 39-year-old was a fierce Trump critic in 2016. But he has since become one of the former president's staunchest defenders, embracing Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was marred by widespread fraud. The Ohio Senator is deeply popular with Trump's core supporters, but analysts have questioned whether he can broaden the ticket's appeal. He shares Trump's aggressive approach to politics, and his conservative statements on issues such as abortion could turn off moderate voters. The four-day convention began less than 48 hours after a gunman opened fire at the outdoor rally, killing one supporter. The 20-year-old suspect was a registered Republican. He was shot dead at the scene and his motive remains unclear.2 days ago

- 1:41Biden says 'bullseye' reference to Trump was a mistakeReuters VideosSTORY: :: July 15, 2024 U.S. President Joe Biden told NBC's Lester Holt he made a mistake when he told supporters to put rival Donald Trump in a "bullseye" :: President Biden says his 'bullseye' reference to rival Trump was a mistake HOLT: "Well, let's talk about the conversation this has started and it's really about language. What we say out loud and the consequences of those. You've called your opponent an existential threat. On a call a week ago, you said it's time to put Trump in the bullseye. There's some dispute about the context, but I think you appreciate that words matter." BIDEN: "I didn't say crosshairs. I was talking about focus on. Look, the truth of the matter was, what I guess I was talking about at the time was there's very little focus on Trump's agenda." HOLT: "Yeah, the term was bullseye." BIDEN: "It was a mistake to use the word. I didn't say crosshairs. I meant bullseye, I meant focus on him. Focus on what he's doing. Focus on his policies. Focus on the number of lies he told in the debate. Focus. I mean, there's there's a whole range of things that, look, I'm not the guy that said I want to be a dictator on day one. I'm not the guy that refused to accept the outcome of the election. I'm not the guy who said he won't accept the outcome of this election automatically. You can't only love your country when you win." HOLT: "Have you taken a step back and done a little soul searching on things that you may have said that could incite people who are not balanced?" BIDEN: "Well, I don't think, look, how do you talk about the threat to democracy, which is real, when a president says things like he says. Do you just not say anything because it may incite somebody? Look, I have not engaged in that rhetoric."2 days ago

- 2:03Trump Media, crypto stocks surge on boosted election oddsReuters VideosSTORY: Crypto stocks, prison operators and other shares that could benefit from a Donald Trump presidency jumped on Monday, as an assassination attempt on the Republican candidate boosted odds of an election victory in November. Trump Media & Technology Group, owner of the former president's Truth Social platform, soared 35%. Trump owns a majority stake in the company, worth about $3.8 billion as of late June, according to LSEG data. The stock has surged 75% this year, driven by retail traders betting Trump will win the rematch against his Democratic rival, President Joe Biden. Online betting site PredictIt showed bets of an election win for Trump at 67 cents, up from Friday's 60 cents, with Joe Biden at 27 cents. Also getting a boost: crypto stocks, tracking bitcoin's jump to a two-week high, as Trump has presented himself as a champion of cryptocurrency. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global, and bitcoin miners Riot Platforms and Marathon Digital all rose. Gun makers and prison stocks jumped. Gun stocks such as Smith & Wesson Brands and Sturm Ruger & Company tend to rise after a mass shooting as calls for gun control can lead some people to buy more firearms, fearing their availability may become limited. And prison operator stocks Geo Group and CoreCivic gained, as Trump has promised to crack down on illegal immigration, which could boost demand for detention centers. On the downside, clean energy stocks such as Invesco Solar and iShares Global Clean Energy slipped as Trump has said he would reverse many of the Biden administration's signature climate policies, including tax incentives, if he wins the election. All three of Wall Street's main indexes were up, with the Dow hitting a record intraday high, and long-dated bond yields also rose, in part on the assumption Trump's policies would add to inflation and debt.2 days ago
