Sep 11, 2012 · An Irish Catholic woman, from humble beginnings, back in the day when women had few opportunities, Betty Golden Carter embodied the expression “you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.” She was a feminist pioneer, family therapist, author, activist, teacher, mentor, and self-confident woman who enjoyed herself immensely.
The original faculty was headed by internationally renowned therapist and author Betty Carter, LCSW, who served as Director of FIW until her retirement in 1997. She was succeeded by Elliott J. Rosen, Ed. D., L.M.F.T., who retired as director in 2009. Elliott remains on faculty at FIW.

Jul 10, 2015 · Betty Carter. Another member of The Women’s Project in Family Therapy was Betty Carter (Walters, et al., 1988). Carter’s psychotherapeutic background is in transgenerational models of therapy, and was specifically influenced by Bowenian systems theory.
Betty Carter is the founder and director emerita (1977-1997) of FIW, and an internationally acclaimed author and teacher of family therapy. Her accomplishments include five major books and innumerable chapters and articles which have immeasurably enriched the field.
Betty Carter, MSW, was originally trained as a Bowenian Family Therapist and became well known for her work on the expanded family life cycle. In collaboration with Monica McGoldrick, Carter integrated the concepts of individual human development and the traditional family life cycle to develop an expanded perspective of family development.
