In 2002, he adopted an orphaned grizzly bear cub named Brutus from an overcrowded wildlife park in another state, and soon after built a sanctuary for the bear near his home.
In 2004, he founded the Montana Grizzly Encounter and has rescued 7 bears from inhumane captivity situations. The sanctuary is open to school groups free of charge and thousands of children learn about bear safety and conservation every year.

Brutus, also called Brutus the Bear (January 17, 2002 – February 2, 2021), was a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) who was adopted as a newborn cub by the naturalist Casey Anderson, star of the National Geographic documentary Expedition Grizzly.
He is the trainer and best friend of Brutus the Bear and the co-owner and director of the Montana Grizzly Encounter, a grizzly bear sanctuary in Bozeman, Montana.
