May 18, 2020 · The Modest Start. On Feb. 20, 1920, the SMU Board of Trustees voted to establish a College of Applied Arts and Sciences that included a business administration department. At the time, Dallas was almost a century removed from its pioneer beginnings along the bank of the Trinity River.
