Her third husband was Charles Lederer, nephew of Marion Davies. They had one son, Daniel Lederer. [7] Shirley had brief relationships with younger Western star Rory Calhoun and with French film star Jean-Pierre Aumont. Shirley died from lung cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 75 on July 4, 1993, and was cremated. [7]

He began writing in 1931 after giving up his journalism career and continued writing until 1963. He was survived by his widow Anne Shirley, his son Daniel D. Lederer, and his stepdaughter Julie Payne.
Daniel is the co-founder and former CEO of the Budapest based Milestone Institute and of several other education related spin-offs. He began his career in academic research and diplomacy and has lived in Berlin, London and Budapest.
