Dec 2, 2023 · De Queen was formally founded on June 3, 1897, when a petition signed by forty-two residents asked County Judge Ben Norwood to incorporate the new town. D. Henry Harris was the town’s first mayor, and John G. McKean was recorder. W. E. Dicus, who had a peg leg, was the town’s first marshal.
De Queen (/ d iː k w iː n / DEE-kween) is a city and the county seat of Sevier County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 6,629 at the 2010 census. The placename is the anglicization of the family name of the Dutch merchant and railway financier, Jan de Goeijen (1861–1944).
De Queen is the county seat of Sevier County, Arkansas. The history of the city of De Queen is entwined with the construction of the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The KCS railroad connects Kansas City, Missouri, to the Gulf of Mexico at Port Arthur, Texas.
Brief History of De Queen. Sevier County was created by Arkansas’s Territorial Legislature on October 17, 1828, and was named in honor of Ambrose Hundley Sevier, speaker of the Arkansas territorial House of Representatives and one of the state’s first two U.S. senators. When Sevier County was created, it was much larger than it is today.
The museum is located in the old De Queen Post Office Building and features exhibits that span from the late 19th century to the present. These exhibits include a variety of artifacts, photographs, documents, and other items that tell the story of the county’s history.

The district is locally significant under Criterion A on the National Register of Historic Places as the original commercial center supporting the city of De Queen (Sevier County).
