Funny Games (alternatively titled Funny Games U.S.) is a 2007 psychological horror-thriller film written and directed by Michael Haneke, and a remake of his own 1997 film of the same title. Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt, and Brady Corbet star in the main roles.
May 14, 2019 · This, it turns out, is Funny Games’ true climax. If the it’s-only-a-movie-ness of it all was previously secretly reassuring, it now becomes enraging and tragic: it’s only a movie, so we can rewind and redo this scene. This is perhaps Haneke’s slyest attack on the audience.
Funny Games is a 1997 Austrian psychological horror - thriller film written and directed by Michael Haneke, and starring Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Mühe, and Arno Frisch. The plot involves two young men who hold a family hostage and torture them with sadistic games in their vacation home.
When it finally does bring violence to the screen, you are supposed to cheer, but because it is an unrealistic movie trope, the villains rewind the film to show you what would actually happen (which if you recall, they told you would happen early on into the film).
The point of the movie was to make audiences uncomfortable with onscreen violence. The director, Michael Haneke, knew that audiences had become desensitized to violence, and wanted to show it in a context that wasn't remotely entertaining or funny. He's also subverting expectations.
