  1. Apr 1, 1999 · Steven Erikson. 3.92. 123,080 ratings8,677 reviews. Vast legions of gods, mages, humans, dragons and all manner of creatures play out the fate of the Malazan Empire in this first book in a major epic fantasy series from Steven Erikson. The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody ...

  2. Jul 3, 2023 · Gardens of the Moon is about Empress Laseen continually pushing for the expansion of the Malazan Empire. At her disposal, she has seasoned armies, powerful mages, Claw assassins, and many allies, both natural and unnatural. She is unforgiving, will backstab when required, and can go to what seem like absurdly risky lengths to get her way with ...

I love a good mystery in fantasy, and GotM has got a lot! Who or what is the Eel? What are the Gods up to? What are Laseen’s plans? I could list more in this Gardens of the Moonbook review, but there’s a few. Each thread is weaved intricately throughout the many point of views we experience the story through – this leads onto the next pro…

It’s a fantastic experience – once you get used to it – moving from one person to another (not always a “person” too), seeing a continuation of a scene through many eyes. You get differing opinions and see events in ways unique to that character, depending on their experience and loyalties.

I don’t believe we have been told enough of the Warrens to know if the magic system is amazing, but I’ve seen enough of it to know I want to know more! It’s brutal in warfare but intricate in healing and travel. There are so many elements to the magic in this book that I can’t go over them all here – just know that it’s fantastic to see and experie...

I mean that as both epic in scope, and epic as in “incredible”, but I will focus on scope. As I mentioned before, there are many characters, all with their own motivations and loyalties – not only that, though, but there are Gods, ancient races (yes, more than one), and incredible magical creatures. This is one point that I can’t go into any detail...

I think that Paran, Tattersail, Kruppe, Crokus, and maybe Lorn, are the most developed characters of this book. Even then, I would have liked to have seen more of who they are beneath the facades they wear in order to push through the plot. Whiskeyjack and Anomander Rake could have been so much better if we’d only seen more of who they are, rather ...

Having now finished the book, I’ve flicked through those chapters again and find that I don’t struggle with them at all. I appreciate that Erikson has cut the slow introduction that plagues many fantasy books, however he has done it in such a way that there is nothing there to replace the introductions to the characters, the world, or the plot. Thi...

  3. Apr 20, 2020 · With a series as long as Malazan Book of the Fallen, and all of the extra trilogies and books written by both Steven Erikson and Ian C. Esslemont, there is massive potential for readers to become obsessed with a new fantasy world and story. When I first read Gardens of the Moon, I put it down after 200 pages and thought that I might not ever ...

  4. Gardens Of The Moon is more difficult than most in this aspect as many, many characters enter the story in a very short time period and there is a lot to keep up with. It is though, without doubt, worth preserving as the whole story comes together beautifully and the plot begins to make more and more sense.

  5. Aug 26, 2009 · GARDENS OF THE MOON by Steven Erikson ( Amazon) is not a simple novel–in fact this novel has, arguably, the steepest learning curve of any fantasy novel to date. This review will be a tad longer than usual, but it deserves nothing less. GARDENS OF THE MOON is the first tale in Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

  7. Jun 21, 2022 · “Gardens of the Moon” is incredibly ambitious, a jaw-dropping feat of imagination, depth, and is definitely genre-changing. I can see why so many consider it to be such a ground-breaking fantasy book. That said, it is an intimidating read, where one will lose track of all the varying plot lines, names, places, and motivations of the characters.
