Warning: This is a spoiler free review, but if you want to genuinely be surprised, go in as blank as possible. Don't watch any clips and wait to read what people are saying about this film until after you see it....

Amazing Amy's vanished, but the real truth is that Amazing Amy never existed at all.

That's not a spoiler. It's really the core of what this film is about. If you haven't read Gillian Flynn's obsessively addictive page turner, then rest assured that Gone Girl is rich with scintillating, fascinating, and ultimately gut-wrenching twists, but never do we discover that it's all been some elaborate Kafkaesque nightmare or the fantasy of an unhinged mind. Though, minds are indeed unhinged.

Gone Girl unearths the methods human beings use to deceive themselves and one other about who they really are. It reveals the ways in which the sunny masks that we present to the world are stripped away over the course of a relationship, leaving the partners raw and festering with disappointment, resentment, and rage. Rendering them each desperate to force the other back into the costume they donned in the early part of the romance, aching to once again see the brightest version of themselves reflected in their lovers eyes. And in that way, as much as Amy is gone, she was never really there to begin with. She was a projected illusion born of her husband’s desire to possess the “perfect” woman and himself become the “ideal” man. Gone Girl is about marriage; the worst, vilest, and toxic of marriages, but it's also about relationships at large, including the one we have with ourselves. Oh, and yes, as you are expecting, those themes are explored within the framework of a crafty and sharp little murder mystery.

Gone Girl is a powerful adaptation of a complex book told in the vein of a deliciously pulpy crime thriller. As in Gillian Flynn's novel, there's far more to this tale than initially meets the eye. For Gone Girl is ultimately the story of a tortured, noxious, violent relationship that is also, often, unnervingly relatable. [poilib element="accentDi...
