In the audio commentary to Caligula, Malcolm McDowell says in the scene where he kisses Guido on the lips, that he was accused of trying piss off Guido's boyfriend, the film's producer (Franco Rossellini?). Maybe he died of AIDS. Franco died young too...perhaps from the same thing.
