Sep 18, 2019 · Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano in the world with the mountain having an elevation of 22,615 feet. Ojos del Salado is an active volcano with the most recent major eruption happening 1,300 years ago. The volcano is situated on the Argentina-Chile border near the Atacama Desert.
There are more than 1,500 potentially active volcanoes or volcanic areas around the world at any given time. They may be the world’s most dynamic landforms, given their ability to grow by accretion or shatter and collapse during an eruption.
Rising gradually to more than 4 km (2.5 mi) above sea level, Hawaii’s Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on our planet. Its submarine flanks descend to the sea floor an additional 5 km (3 mi), and the sea floor in turn is depressed by Mauna Loa's great mass another 8 km (5 mi).
The highest volcano with documented historical eruptions is Llullaillaco, which had three in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Active fumaroles, however, mark the summit crater of Nevados Ojos del Salado, 267 km to the south and 148 m higher than Llullaillaco.
