Hjalmar Schacht (born Horace Greeley Hjalmar Schacht; 22 January 1877 – 3 June 1970, German pronunciation: [ˈjalmaʁ ˈʃaxt]) was a German economist, banker, politician, and co-founder of the German Democratic Party.

Hjalmar Schacht (1877–1970) was Minister of Economics and General Plenipotentiary for the War Economy until 1937 and Reichsbank (national bank) president until 1939. Superceded by Hermann Göring in economic affairs, he remained as Minister without Portfolio until 1943.
Hjalmar Schacht was appointed President of the Reichsbank on the 17 March 1933. Having previously brought Germany out of the hyperinflation crisis in 1923, Schacht was a well-respected banker. His appointment helped to calm many people’s fears about the radical nature of the Nazi Party.
