- 2:28Gazan pupil longs for school as war hampers new academic yearReuters VideosSTORY: Twelve-year-old Rama Abu Seif should be starting seventh grade. But like hundreds of thousands of students in Gaza, she now finds herself sheltering in classrooms instead of studying in them. Her school bag, which was once full of textbooks and pens, is now stuffed with clothes. Most of her textbooks are long gone too - she tells us they were burnt to light fires in ovens and to keep warm. "Last year I was supposed to be in sixth grade, but we missed the whole year because of the war. This year, I am supposed to be in seventh grade, but I'm missing this year too. The class in which we used to study, learn, write, and read is now filled with displaced people. We used to stand in line with the girls and do sports and exercise, but now we are standing in line to get water or at charity kitchens." Rama is one of an estimated 625,000 school-age children whose education has been interrupted by the Israel-Hamas war. Since the conflict began 11 months ago, schools have been bombed or turned into shelters for displaced people, such as Rama and her family. "Instead of waking up and going to school with enthusiasm, now we wake up and wash our faces - it takes us an hour to wash our faces. Then we line up in a long queue for the bathroom. When we finish, we have to go get water, and the line for water is of course very, very long. We keep filling salty water then we go fill drinking water. After we finish, we also line up for the bathroom. Then, when it's time to eat, we line up in front of a charity kitchen like everyone else. The line there is very long, it's a struggle." There’s no end in sight for the conflict. The United States, Qatar and Egypt have failed to mediate a deal that would secure a ceasefire and the return of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas. The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict was triggered on October 7 when Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent assault on the Hamas-governed enclave has since killed over 40,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.1 hour ago
- 1:31Polio vaccinations for Gaza children surpass targets, says WHOReuters VideosSTORY: :: The WHO says it is ahead of its targets for children's polio vaccinations in Gaza :: September 3, 2024 :: Gaza :: Rik Peeperkorn, World Health Organization “So yesterday, the second day, 74 346 children were vaccinated, that's the second day of the polling campaign. The first day, 86 683 children were vaccinated. So the total number of the first two days, children under 10, reached 161,030 children. That actually surpassed the target we set. We had an estimate there would be like 156,500 children in these central zones.” :: The campaign relies on daily eight-hour pauses in fighting in specific areas of the besieged enclave “Until now, things are going well. Again, this is only the third day. So, these area-specific humanitarian pauses, until now, they work. “So we need to vaccinate 640,000 children all over Gaza. And this campaign, there are actually two campaigns. We started now the first round and the second round will be in four weeks' time. We need to cover a minimum of 90% of those children to stop the transmission within Gaza and to avoid polio spread, international spread of polio to surrounding countries.” :: Deir Al-Balah, Gaza :: September 2, 2024 The campaign, which was hastened after the discovery of the first polio case in a Gazan baby last month, relies on daily eight-hour pauses in fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in specific areas of the besieged enclave. The disease can cause paralysis and even death in young children. Health teams will move on to southern Gaza later this week, where they are aiming to reach some 340,000 children, he said, followed by northern Gaza. Peeperkorn said that some children in southern Gaza were thought to be outside the agreed zone for the pauses and that negotiations continued in order to reach them.5 hours ago

Goldberg-Polin was one of 40 people taken hostage from the Nova festival during the October 7 attack by Hamas. His body was among those of six Israeli hostages recovered by Israeli forces in Gaza over the weekend, triggering a wave of grief and fury and nationwide strikes that have shut down much of Israel. Israel's military said they were recently killed by Palestinian Hamas militants. Rachel Goldberg-Polin is the mother of Hersh. "I think we all did every single thing we could. The hope that perhaps a deal was near was so authentic, it was crunchy. It tasted close. But it was not to be so. Those beautiful six survived together and those beautiful six died together, and now they will be remembered together forever." On Monday (September 2), flights, transport services and hospitals were severely disrupted as protesters called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring the remaining 101 hostages home from Gaza, underscoring deep divisions in Israel over his approach. U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he did not think Netanyahu was doing enough to secure such an agreement. Biden said he was close to presenting his own final proposal for a deal to bring hostages home. Netanyahu has faced months of protests and pressure from his own defense minister as well as senior generals and intelligence officials. - 1:02Gaza mother relieved children are vaccinated against polioReuters VideosSTORY: ::September 1, 2024 ::Deir al-Balah, Gaza ::A displaced Gazan is happy her children are now vaccinated against polio under a UN program ::Wafaa Abdelhadi Palestinian mother "Thank God, I am happy that I vaccinated my children against polio so that they don't suffer from anything in the future God willing. Hopefully all Gazan children get vaccinated not only against polio, but with other vaccinations too." "But I gave birth during the war and here she is, living through the war too. When I gave birth to her during the war, I was worried if I will vaccinate her, at one month, at one week, at two months, three months, four months - and where? Where should I go to vaccinate her?" "We don't just want vaccinations. We want them to stop the war. Let them stop the war. Every time I get displaced, this is our biggest worry, especially for those who have children. When I flee and move, I would be so worried... it is better for me to die than to keep moving from area to area. I have been displaced seven times." Israel and Hamas agreed to pause fighting in areas of Gaza for at least eight hours daily from Sunday to Tuesday (September 3) for the vaccination of 640,000 children against polio. 28-year-old Abdelhadi and her daughters, five-month-old Lynn and five-year-old Roueida, joined other Palestinian families who crowded a UN clinic in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah. The territory's health ministry said at least 72,611 children were vaccinated the first day. The campaign comes after the confirmation last month that a baby was partially paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus, the first such case in the territory in 25 years. WHO officials say at least 90% of the children need to be vaccinated twice with four weeks between doses for the campaign to succeed, but it faces huge challenges in Gaza, which has been largely destroyed by the war. Abdelhadi, originally from Khan Younis and whose house was destroyed, said she was displaced seven times since the start of the war in Gaza. She is now staying at her parents' house in Deir al-Balah, and hopes to return to Khan Younis where her husband is staying with his parents.1 day ago

I feel that I support this strike because really all of the people in Israel want our friends and brothers to come back from Gaza and be free." :: Professor Yehuda Ullmann, Chief of Surgery at Rambam Hospital :: "We are striking. It's a very hard word for physicians who are here to take care for the life and the well-being of our patients. But we are in a very, very hard situation now, we and all the country, because of the hostages. And yesterday it was maybe the hardest day, because we heard about the six hostages that were killed after suffering for 11 months. We can't stand aside and that's why we came into a strike." The head of the Histadrut union, which represents hundreds of thousands of workers across the economy, called for the strike on Sunday (September 1) after the bodies of six Israeli hostages were recovered from southern Gaza tunnels. Workers at Israel's main commercial port Haifa were also on strike while hospitals were partially operating and banks were closed. Many private sector businesses were open but employers have allowed staff to join the strike so many services were disrupted. The recovery of the six hostages, who were shot dead between 48-72 hours before being found by Israeli forces, according to health ministry estimates, triggered deep shock in Israel, prompting at least half a million people to take to the streets in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in protest on Sunday. - 2:48Massive protests hit Israel after six hostages killed in GazaReuters VideosSTORY: Massive protests swept Israel on Sunday (August 1) after the death of six hostages in Gaza. Protesters are increasingly frustrated over the failure of the Israel's leadership to secure a ceasefire deal that would free captives in Gaza who have now been held for nearly 11 months. Israeli media estimated up to half a million people demonstrated across Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring home the remaining 101 hostages, about a third of whom Israeli officials estimate have died. Idit Teperson blames Netanyahu for what has unfolded: "I think we have a criminal government. Criminal government who let the hostages to be murdered only for the sake of the coalition. And we have a prime minister who doesn't think of the good of the country but only of his own good." In Tel Aviv, police officers clashed with demonstrators, as they urged them to stop blocking traffic. In Jerusalem, protesters blocked streets and demonstrated outside of Netanyahu’s house. It was only earlier the same day that the Israeli military announced the recovery of the hostages’ bodies. They say the bodies were found in a tunnel in the Southern Gaza city of Rafah, as the Israeli health ministry confirmed they were “murdered by Hamas terrorists in a number of shots at close range”. By the end of Sunday, labor leaders called for a one-day general strike on Monday. Netanyahu, who faces growing calls to end nearly 11 months of war, said Sunday that Israel would not rest until those responsible were caught, while Hamas officials blamed the Israeli government for the deaths because of its refusal to sign a ceasefire deal. Families of the deceased hostages criticized the government for delays in negotiations, while U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his anger and vowed accountability for Hamas. Negotiations mediated by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt have not yet succeeded despite ongoing efforts. Meanwhile, Israel and Hamas agreed to pause fighting in areas of Gaza while a polio vaccination campaign begins after a baby last month was partially paralyzed by the virus, the first case in the territory in 25 years. Israel's assault on Gaza began after Hamas and other militants killed about 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages in attacks on Israel on Oct. 7, according to Israeli tallies. Since then, Israel's offensive has leveled much of the enclave of 2.3 million people, and the Gaza health ministry says at least 40 thousand Palestinians have been killed. Displaced people are living in dire conditions with inadequate shelter and a hunger crisis.1 day ago
