Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was a noted Holocaust survivor, award-winning novelist, journalist, human rights activist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel was born in Sighet, a Romanian shtetl, to an Orthodox Jewish family on September 30, 1928. His parents, Shlomo and Sarah, owned a grocery store in the village.
