Dec 8, 2020 · Judge Ralph Karl Winter Jr. ’60, a former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and former William K. Townsend Professor of Law at Yale Law School, died on December 8, 2020 at the age of 85.
From his seminal 1977 article defending state chartering of corporations as a ‘race to the top’ to his hundreds of finely crafted opinions, Judge Winter shaped corporate and securities law for nearly 60 years.
From July 1, 1997 to September 30, 2000, Judge Winter served as Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In April 1998, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference.
