Internal conflict tears an American gypsy family further apart when the head of the clan dies, leaving the title of 'King' to his grandson, rather than his ne'er-do-well son. Even though the grandson refuses the role, his father tries to destroy him.
King of the gypsies, Zharko Stepanowicz (Sterling Hayden), visits the camp of fellow gypsy Spiro (Michael V. Gazzo) and demands the marriage of Spiro's daughter, Rose (Susan Sarnadon), to his son, Groffo (Judd Hirsch), a union for which Zharko paid $4,500.
The grandson (Eric Roberts) of a Gypsy king (Sterling Hayden) inherits the New York clan ahead of his father (Judd Hirsch), who tries to kill him.
