Laura Owens (American, b.1970) is a mixed-media painter, best known for her images of animals and landscape incorporating a number of art historical references. Originally from Euclid, OH, Owens received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
Laura Owens’s paintings employ or subvert the techniques and tropes of traditional art history. Notable for its dizzying eclecticism of both subject and style, the artist’s distinctive practice helped to legitimize the resurgence of painting as a critical medium in the mid-1990s.
