Shanghai metro line 1, the first subway line in the city, is now the busiest and most important north-south line in the system. It covers 28 stations from Baoshan District to Minhang District, passing South Railway Station, Xujiahui, People's Square and Railway Station.

May 28, 1993 · Marked by its distinctive red colour, Line 1 was the first line of the Shanghai Metro system. Initially, only a 4.4 kilometre section was opened. Today it is 36.4 kilometres long with 28 stations.
