Lucifer was one of God’s angels—a magnificent being. The prophet Ezekiel described him as “the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty…. Every precious stone was [his] covering…. [He was] the anointed cherub who covers…. [He was] perfect in [his] ways from the day [he was] created” (28:12-15).
It appeared in the King James Version of the Bible in Isaiah and before that in the Vulgate (the late-4th-century Latin translation of the Bible), not as the name of a devil but as the Latin word lucifer (uncapitalized), meaning "the morning star", "the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing".
In some versions of the Bible, the personage described in Isaiah 14:12 is called Lucifer. For example, the King James Version reads: How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!
