Michael began drumming at the early age of nine in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. His first teacher was a "by the book rudiments guy" so Michael quickly started playing along to his sister's Beatles albums to have a release from his regimented drum lessons.
Cartellone is the drummer on former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley's 2009 album, Will Rap Over Hard Rock for Food. He is also an accomplished painter and ardent Charlie Chaplin and Cleveland Indians fan.

Michael Cartellone told one Atlanta-based radio station in June 2015 that he just happened to be in "the right place at the right time" when Skynyrd needed a drummer in 1998. As a kid growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, Michael got his start playing in local bars.
