Olathe (/ oʊ ˈ l eɪ θ ə / oh-LAY-thə) is the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is the fourth-most populous city in both the Kansas City metropolitan area and the state of Kansas , with a 2020 population of 141,290.

Olathe (o lay' tha) is the Shawnee Indian word for "beautiful". Incorporated in 1857. Location is twenty miles southwest of downtown Kansas City, along the historic Oregon-California and Santa Fe Trails. Olathe is accessed via Interstate I-35. Form of Government is Mayor-Council-Manager.

The first history of the city was written that year. In 1875, 72 percent of the county worked in agriculture, 11 percent in professional and personal service, 8 percent in trade and transportation, and 9 percent in manufacturing and mining. Olathe's population in 1875 was 2,146.
