Pope Urban VI (Latin: Urbanus VI; Italian: Urbano VI; c. 1318 – 15 October 1389), born Bartolomeo Prignano (Italian pronunciation: [bartoloˈmɛːo priɲˈɲaːno]), was head of the Catholic Church from 8 April 1378 to his death, in October 1389.
Urban VI (1318-1389) was elected pope in 1378, ending the French-dominated papacy at Avignon. His harsh and ill-tempered rule provoked a split in the church, as 13 cardinals elected an antipope, Clement VII, in 1378.

Before he was known as Urban VI, this pope went by Bartolomeo Prignano. He was born around 1318 in a small Italian commune called Itri. Once he reached adulthood, Bartolomeo went to Avignon for his education. There, he formed powerful relationships with other members of the Church.
