In chess, scholar's mate is the checkmate achieved by the following moves, or similar: 1. e4 e5. 2. Qh5 Nc6. 3. Bc4 Nf6 ?? 4. Qxf7 # The same mating pattern may be reached by various move orders. For example, White might play 2.Bc4.
- Choose to play White. Scholar’s Mate only works if you’re in control of the white pieces, since the person playing White has the privilege of making the first move.
- Begin the game by moving your king's pawn forward two squares from E2 to E4. This will get it out of the way so you can sneak your king’s bishop out from the rear.
- Move your king’s bishop out 3 squares diagonally from F1 to C4. Slide the piece out to the left through the gap created by your opening move. In this position, it will threaten your opponent's king’s bishop's pawn, which sits at F7.
- Advance your queen 4 squares diagonally from D1 to H5. Move your queen out to the right, in the opposite direction that you moved your bishop. It will now also be a threat to the F7 pawn.
Scholar’s Mate is a checkmating pattern achieved in just four moves, utilizing different move orders. It involves the collaboration of the light-squared bishop and the queen to exploit the most sensitive spot in black’s camp, namely the f7-square, which is often inadequately defended by the king alone.
