In 1977, Gillman was hired as offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears in 1977. The Bears, with Walter Payton leading the way in rushing yards (1,852), won 9 games and earned their first postseason appearance in 14 years, which ended in a loss in the Divisional Round.
DK – Since I played for only one team not using Gillman’s offense (Al Davis had taken it to the Raiders), I have difficulty comparing one coach’s offense with another. Sid was one of the early if not the first head coach to use a tight end. I also enjoyed playing wide receiver when required.
Sid went on to become the foremost authority on forward passing offense. He was the first coach to produce divisional champions in both the National and American Football Leagues. Gillman’s first pro coaching job came in 1955 when he became the Los Angeles Rams head coach.
