Adjacent to the C&O Canal just below Glen Echo is the Sycamore Island Club, a private community organization serving family members since the 1880s. Club members have access to picnic areas, fishing, canoeing, and swimming in the Potomac.
Aug 31, 2017 · Sycamore Island; Mile 6.5. Sycamore Island always intrigued me as I passed it on earlier rides. A private club owns the island, as it has since 1885, and tightly controls access to it. Members take their own hand-pulled ferry across the narrow channel from the C&O trail towpath to the island.
The Club owns two islands in the Potomac River: Sycamore Island and Rupperts Island. All club facilities are located on the lower Island, Sycamore. Rupperts Island, which is directly upstream, is home to beaver, cormorants, geese and other wildlife.
