United States Lines operated cargo services from 1921 to 1989, and ocean liners until 1969—most famously, the SS United States and the Leviathan. The company was formed with three ships from the tonnage of the failed United States Mail Steamship Company.
The company came into existence in 1921 owing to the inability of the United States Mail SS Co. to fulfill it's obligations to the United States Shipping Board. Originally under the joint management of Moore & McCormack, Roosevelt SS Co. and United American Lines.
