The city is located on the San Joaquin River in the northern San Joaquin Valley. It lies at the southeastern corner of a large inland river delta that isolates it from other nearby cities such as Sacramento and those of the San Francisco Bay Area. Stockton was founded by Charles Maria Weber in 1849 after he acquired Rancho Campo de los Franceses.
The city is located in Northern California south of the state capital Sacramento and north of Modesto. Stockton is along Interstate 5, State Route 99 and State Route 4 amid the farmland of the California Central Valley.

Located on the San Joaquin Delta, Stockton is the world's most inland natural port and was previously a major port city. One of the larger cities along I-5 through the Central Valley, it is a convenient stop and offers a variety of restaurants and accommodations for road-trippers.
