Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colouring, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings.
Turner is perhaps the best-loved English Romantic artist. He became known as 'the painter of light', because of his increasing interest in brilliant colours as the main constituent in his landscapes and seascapes. His works include water colours, oils and engravings.

Joseph Mallord William Turner. The son of a London barber and wig maker, Turner entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of fourteen. As a youth, he traveled around England making drawings and watercolors of the countryside. In 1796, Turner exhibited his first oil painting at the Royal Academy.
