    In the 1800s, New Yorkers got their water primarily from the Old Croton Aqueduct. The aqueduct was replaced in part by the New Croton Aqueduct in 1890, but the original remained somewhat in use until 1955. Old Croton Aqueduct was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1992.
