Recently, there has been an increased focus on the importance of literacy and language in science education.
Teaching science vocabulary is important for so many reasons. Most obviously, it helps students to explain observations and phenomena and ask targeted questions. Also, an understanding of key vocabulary helps students access information from other resources.
Much vocabulary is learned without formal teaching. We gain words from conversation, observation, television/media, and reading. However, research shows that explicitly teaching vocabulary can measurably improve reading comprehension — if we teach the right words well enough.
