Dec 17, 2023 · On 20th September 1378 in Fondi, Robert of Geneva, Bishop of Avignon, was elected as the new pope, Clement VII. King Charles V of France and the powerful Gaetani family in Fondi championed the new pope. Clement VII promptly excommunicated Urban VI.
The first of these antipopes was Clement VII, born Robert of Geneva. Elected in Fondi by a faction of cardinals who had become disillusioned with Pope Urban VI, Clement VII established his papal court in Avignon in 1378.
