STORY: Israeli forces have retreated from some Gaza City districts after a fierce, week-long offensive. They left dozens of dead and wrecked homes and roads, residents and rescue services said on Friday (July 12). Bodies wrapped in white shrouds and bearing the names of the dead women and men lay on the floor at Al-Ahli Hospital. The Gaza Civil Emergency Service said teams had collected around 60 bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces over the past week from the area of Tel Al-Hawa and the edges of the Sabra neighborhood in Gaza City. While tanks withdrew from some areas, Israeli snipers and tanks continued to control high ground at some locations, and warned residents from there against trying to return home. Displaced Palestinian Musa al-Dahdouh: "We were trapped inside the building and at 2 or 3 a.m. we saw people. We did not come out, we said 'we'll go out in the morning'. In the morning there were planes, they wouldn't stop, there were many - there were many. Planes, tanks, drones, all bombing us." He said Israeli forces had detained and interrogated his two sons and their wives and children before allowing them to leave. "My mother’s in a wheelchair as is my wife, she has metal implants in her arms and legs. My grandson’s legs are paralyzed - his father carried him on his back." Home to more than a quarter of Gaza's residents before the war, Gaza City was largely razed to the ground in late 2023. But hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had returned to homes in the ruins before Israel once again ordered them out. The Israeli military said on Thursday (July 11) that its forces were working to dismantle Hamas capabilities in Gaza City, and that it, quote, "follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm." The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said they killed and wounded many Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets and mortar fire. There has been no Israeli army comment on those claims. The Gaza City offensive took place as U.S.-backed mediators worked to finalize a peace deal that would free remaining hostages taken by Hamas in their cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7. On Friday, a senior Hamas official blamed Israel for a failure to build on momentum created when the Islamist faction dropped a key demand in the U.S.-drafted ceasefire offer a week ago to clear the way for a deal. More than 100 people were killed in the attack on the community of about 1,000 people, and 32 members were taken captive back to Gaza. Eleven of whom are still believed held hostage. And on Thursday the Israeli military published the findings of a first probe into its own security failings, acknowledging it failed to protect the citizens of Be'eri. Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari: "It is painful and difficult for me to say this, the Israeli Defense Forces should have defended the residents of Kibbutz Be'eri. But unfortunately we were not there. For long hours of fighting, for hours, the residents of Be'eri defended their families with their bodies, alone in front of the terrorists." The investigation found Israel's military was unprepared for the scenario of a massive infiltration of militants into Israel, had inadequate forces in the area, and did not have a clear picture of the events until hours after the attack began. The rampage through Be'eri and other Israeli communities near the border with Gaza killed 1,200, according to Israeli tallies. It was Israel's deadliest day and the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust. The military presented its report to Be'eri's residents, many of whom were relocated across the country to a resort beside the Dead Sea. Amit Solve is Kibbutz Be'eri's chairman. "We didn't get an answer because they don't have an answer. They did an investigation. And the conclusion of this investigation, this is what is supposed to calm me down in the future, but we didn't get the answer why the army didn't come in a minute." STORY: Palestinians from Gaza City are once again on the move. The are heading south after Israeli forces demanded they evacuate amid an intense military assault. They are fleeing by any means they can: on foot, in the back of trucks. Mona al-Husseini and her family have a horse-drawn cart. She spoke to Reuters in al-Nuseirat, south of Gaza City. "We've witnessed a lot. Many soldiers stopped us and kept searching us and stopped us for an hour. It's torture. We left the Haidar roundabout (area in Gaza City) three days ago, we were besieged there. Many rockets were fired on us and we were wrecked. I can't even talk. Our situation is hard to describe or talk about." The fighting has expanded even as Washington pushed for a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. Hamas says a heavy Israeli assault on Gaza City this week could wreck efforts to end the war just as negotiations have entered the home stretch. STORY: From an Egyptian hospital bed, Palestinian Tamer Ossama Salem al-Hafy recalls his ordeal in Gaza, where Israel accused him of being a terrorist. A paramedic at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, al-Hafy said he was shot below the knee by Israeli forces as he helped the injured onto stretchers after an Israeli airstrike last November. He briefly became a patient there but when the hospital came under attack his father carried him across his back, heading for another medical center. But soldiers at an Israeli military checkpoint accused al-Hafy of being a "terrorist." He says they held him in a prison tent for 35 days before releasing him without charge. He says he was beaten and humiliated and did not receive medical care. And that he was blindfold and cuffed by his arms and legs to a bed in the tent the whole time. "The whole time I was in prison, the blindfold was not taken off my eyes at all, except on interrogation days. During interrogation, they would uncover my eyes and put it back on after. I didn’t see the sun until I was released from prison. Food was once every three to four days. It was a pack of liquid vitamins. In the morning, they would wake you up to drink and the same at night. They’d put a straw in my mouth, you take a little and then he says, “that's it, enough". Circumstances no one knows about but God." Israeli authorities did not respond to a request for comment on al-Hafy's account and Reuters could not independently verify it. But it is consistent with those of other Palestinians who have been detained by Israel, like these men, and with statements by human rights groups on alleged abuse and mistreatment. Israel's military has said allegations of abuse against Palestinian detainees were being investigated. Al-Hafy is being treated in an Emirati-run hospital on a cargo ship docked in Egypt, where he longs to return to the wife and four children he hasn't seen since November. On release, he says, he was "dumped" in southern Gaza and had to crawl for a couple of miles. He was treated in four different Gaza hospitals then suffered from a blood clot in his lung and fell into a coma, he says. When he awoke some 25 days later, he had lost sight in his right eye. Al-Hafy believes that being a medic made him a target. "They already hated the medical crew. They’d humiliate us only because of the tag “medical personnel,” without any charge. The words 'medical personnel' and working at a hospital, that was enough for them to treat you as suspect." Israel's military has accused fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad of hiding in hospitals and using human shields, allegations they deny. The military also says it has captured fighters in medical facilities. It has said detainees are treated in accordance with international law.

It said the incident occurred when it struck with "precise munition" a Hamas fighter who took part in the October 7 raid on Israel that precipitated the Israeli assault on Gaza. The militant group Hamas said a renewed Israeli campaign killed more than 60 Palestinians across the enclave on Tuesday (July 9) and threatened to derail efforts to secure a ceasefire in the nine-month-old war.

STORY: Palestinian Youssef Mikdad spent more than two decades in an Israeli jail, where he dreamed of returning one day to a prosperous Gaza Strip where he could make up for lost time with his children. Released last week, he found his house destroyed and his homeland reduced to rubble by Israeli bombardments. He walked through neighborhoods laid waste by air and artillery strikes and found Palestinians displaced many times over by the Israeli offensive living in tents on the beach. "I was surprised by all the destruction I’ve seen, with the displacement of people, no one is living in their houses, the famine I’ve seen in the country, none of the basic life necessities are available in Gaza at all. I haven’t traveled around because I can’t, there’s no car to travel with, no gas and people can’t even walk. People can't even walk for half a kilometer without falling into despair over the suffering they see.” Mikdad's daughter Haya - his favorite child, he says - was just four when he was imprisoned. She was killed by an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City in March, one of more than 38,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza since the start of the war. "I didn't see her as a bride when she got married, but I longed to see her with her children. I was surprised during Ramadan - I got the news while in prison that she was martyred along with her four children and husband. It was such a shock for me - like a bolt of lightning from the sky." Mikdad was seized by Israeli forces from his house in a Gaza City suburb during a raid in 2002. He was convicted of being a member of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the armed wing of the Fatah faction, and served time in several Israeli prisons. He said the atmosphere inside changed radically after Hamas attacked southern Israel last October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Prisoners were tortured, went hungry and were humiliated, he said. Widespread reports of mistreatment of detainees in Israeli prisons have added to international pressure on Israel for its conduct of the Gaza war, now in its tenth month. In May, the U.S. State Department said it was looking into allegations of Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment about prison conditions.
