It was released in November 1979 as the only single and title track from the album An American Dream. The song reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 , and number 16 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
A TV host is suspected of killing his wife and faces danger from the police and the mob in this adaptation of Mailer's novel. The film features Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh, Eleanor Parker and a theme song by Johnny Mandel.

Mailer wrote it in serialized form for Esquire, consciously attempting to resurrect the methodology used by Charles Dickens and other earlier novelists, with Mailer writing each chapter against monthly deadlines.
