May 18, 2024 · 독일어 인 Zeitgeist (차이트가이스트)에서 유래한 용어이다. 독일의 관념론 철학자 헤겔 이 처음 사용한 개념이다. 헤겔은 인류의 역사에서 어떤 시대이던 간에, 그 시대를 관통하는 하나의 절대적인 정신이 있다고 보고 그것을 시대정신이라는 단어로 불렀으며, 그 시대정신은 한 시대가 끝날 때에만 알 수 있다 고 말했다. 마찬가지로 헤겔의 철학적 개념인 세계정신 (Weltgeist) 과 혼용된다. 이 둘은 독일 철학의 근본이 되는 용어인 세계관 (Weltanschauung) 과 관련이 깊은 단어이다. 오늘날 사회학 쪽에서는 조금 가벼운 의미로 어떠한 시대의 유행 을 시대정신이라 부르기도 한다.
