His mother, Emilie Preiswerk Jung {1848-1923}, was of a family from Basel. Her father, a pastor, once taught Hebrew language and literature. He was editor of the journal Das Morgenland in which he called for “a restoration of Palestine to the Jews,” and thus was considered “a forerunner of the Zionists.”
