Why we are theatres ON the bay. Built on reclaimed land, Esplanade was named for the nearby Esplanade Park, one of the oldest public parks in Singapore. Older Singaporeans remember the area as a breezy recreational space and the venue of the beloved Satay Club, a legendary cluster of satay stalls.
Who we are. In 1989, the creation of a world-class performing arts centre was recommended, with input from the arts community. The project took shape as Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, an architectural icon recognised all over the world that shaped the arts and culture in Singapore. Get to know us.
May 17, 2023 · Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is an iconic building almost every Singaporean is familiar with – we even affectionately refer to it as the “durian”. Coined as Asia’s equivalent of the Sydney Opera House by many, the structure is home to a 2,000-seat theatre, concert hall, an outdoor theatre, a shopping centre, and performance spaces.
