    This show may be called "The Flash," but it's as much of an ensemble piece as Arrow is. That was the main point driven home by "Things You Can't Outrun" tonight. The focus shifted towards several supporting players, to the point where Barry himself almost seemed like a secondary concern. Normally that would be a strange decision given how new this show is, but the first two episode did such a great job of building Barry's world and supporting cast that we don't need the hero to always be hogging the spotlight.

    The Flash Gets a Full Season Order

    For now, at least, the show is continuing Arrow's trend of interspersing flashback sequences throughout each episode. Last week I voiced a concern that this approach was both unnecessary and potentially repetitive. That said, one advantage these flashbacks have over Arrow's is that they aren't limited to any one particular setting or time period. Last week it was Barry's childhood in the West household. This week it was S.T.A.R. Labs on the night of the particle accelerator accident. I still doubt there's a need to have flashback material every week, but it was used effectively this week.

    "Things You Can't Outrun" proved that this show can get by just fine focusing on the supporting cast as much as it does Barry Allen. Thanks to the copious flashbacks we learned more about what drives Caitlin, Cisco, and Dr. Wells and saw Ronnie Raymond make his big debut. It would be nice if the same level of attention could be paid to the villains...
