  2. From the places I've been, San Diego and then Las Vegas might be the overall closest places. However, I think if you wanted to leave LA for any reason, San Diego would have most of the same problems. I went to Las Vegas recently and I was pleasantly surprised at a lot of the areas outside of the strip.
