    • A few things I have done that I think help: -build the hype of the creature or encounter -add narrative flair to combat descriptions -fudge the math/rules if you have to.Add health, or to hit bonuses as need be to maintain suspense.
    • A whole lot of it is heralding the creature's power/potency before the fight - letting them see the danger, how the creature works, etc. Then having the fight take place in an interesting place or under interesting circumstances makes up for any mechanical shortcoming.
    • An element the boss could have plausibly prepared based on their knowledge of the characters, especially if a minion escaped. Not a hard counter that makes it unfun like 20 counterspell slots, but some kind of hidden ace.
    • An escape plan for the big boss so he comes back later (and with friends) (SatansToast)
  1. If you use attack patterns, better allow some unconditional (semi-random) pattern switching to blend the fight a bit. i.e. your boss operates based on where the character stands - close to him or far away. Allow some behaviour change, so the player would need to react in time.

  7. The boss could send out its minions to investigate the trap. Killing the minions will make the boss fight easier, allowing the plan to work somewhat, but leaves the boss in the lair. Alternatively, the boss could use some sort of consumable. They are not limited to players.
