Aug 30, 2023 · Platinum is the certification awarded to music albums that have sold more than 1 million copies. Gold is awarded to music albums that have sold more than 500,000 copies. Diamond is the highest certification and is awarded to music singles that have sold more than 10 million copies.
The platinum certification was introduced in 1976 for the sale of one million units for albums and two million for singles, with the gold certification redefined to mean sales of 500,000 units for albums and one million for singles. [7] No album was certified platinum prior to this year.

- Prince and the Revolution, Purple Rain (1984, 13x Platinum) A soundtrack that actually makes for a more coherent cinematic experience than the film it accompanies, Purple Rain is certainly in contention for the most perfect album in rock or pop history, expertly flowing from track to track while delighting, surprising and astounding at each bend.
- The Beatles, Abbey Road (1969, 12x Platinum) Sgt. Pepper suggested that an album could be more than the sum of its parts, but Abbey Road’s side two moved to make those parts essentially inseparable: Chances are, you’ve never once in your life heard “Carry That Weight” without it coming between “Golden Slumbers” and “The End.”

The album miniature (on LP awards) has the correct album cover for the date the award was produced since many later reissues of albums feature alternate covers. The RIAA presentation plate should have the correct language on it for the era of the award. Refer to our section above on this for info.
