William Randolph Marshall (31 August 1947 – 15 July 2016), better known as Billy Marshall Stoneking, was an American-Australian poet, playwright, filmmaker, and teacher. His son C.W. He was an American fascinated by tribal cultures who came to Australia as a young school teacher, moved to Papunya and absorbed himself in that edge between Indigenous and invasive Australia in traditional country over the next four years.

He helped found the Poets' Union of Australia. His first book of poetry, 'Singing The Snake' (Angus and Robertson, 1990), has been hailed as a modern-day classic. Billy has also written for television (co-creator/writer of 'Stringer'), and has made several documentary films.

A graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, Marshall-Stoneking has written many plays, radio-plays and screenplays, including Lasseter: The Making of a Legend (1985), the ABC TV series Stringer (1988) and was principal script editor on the Australian feature film, Chopper.
